Rob Bell and Universalism

Apparently Rob Bell is in the process of coming out of the closet regarding his endorsement of universalism.  It seems that reading the description of his latest book would indicate this.  The book isn’t out yet and I’m sure there will be more discussions of his universalist theology as time goes on.  According to the book description, Bell rejects the reality of hell outright:

…Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith—the afterlife—arguing that a loving God would never sentence human souls to eternal suffering. With searing insight, Bell puts hell on trial, and his message is decidedly optimistic—eternal life doesn’t start when we die; it starts right now.

If Bell is really professing a false gospel of universalism, then the church universal has an obligation to declare this man to be a heretic as well as a false teacher.  His popularity makes him all the more dangerous.  Whatever we do, we need to proceed with caution and make sure all of the facts are clearly on the table.  In the meantime, keep this matter in prayer.
