Today the 112th Congress was sworn in and the balance of power shifted once again. Regardless of whether we agree with the outcome of this or that election, as Christians we are called upon to pray for those who rule over us (1 Tim. 2:1-3). Let us pray that God would change the hearts of our leaders, that He would give them discernment, wisdom, and righteousness in their decisions.
We should especially pray that the church would continue to enjoy liberty and spread the Gospel freely in this land. I think we often forget how blessed we truly are in that regard. Ultimately our liberties are in the hands of God who is sovereign over all things. Those who are in positions of authority are there because He providentially placed them there (Rom. 13:1).
May God save Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court. Likewise, may He extend His blessings to the Commonwealth of Virginia and those magistrates who are in authority over it. The General Assembly starts its new session next week, so we should pray for them in the same manner.
